When to Call a Plumber

1. Persistent Leaks
  • Dripping faucets, running toilets, or small pipe leaks that DIY fixes can’t stop.
  • Even minor leaks can waste gallons of water daily and cause hidden damage.
2. Low or No Water Pressure
  • Could be clogged pipes, corroded lines, or a municipal supply issue.
  • A plumber can diagnose and fix the root cause safely.
3. Slow or Frequently Clogged Drains
  • One clogged sink may be DIY, but multiple slow drains can mean a sewer line problem.
  • Sewer backups should always be handled professionally.
4. No Hot Water or Water Heater Issues
  • If your water heater is leaking, making noises, or not heating properly.
  • Gas/electric repairs can be dangerous, so professional service is best.
5. Burst or Frozen Pipes
  • A plumbing emergency — shut off water immediately and call a plumber.
  • Quick action prevents major water damage.
6. Unexplained Water Bills
  • A sudden spike often signals hidden leaks underground or in walls.
  • Plumbers can perform leak detection to find the source.
7. Foul Odors or Gurgling Sounds
  • Sewer gas smells, bubbling toilets, or gurgling drains may indicate vent or sewer issues.
  • These problems are hazardous if left untreated.
8. Remodeling or New Installation
  • Moving pipes, adding bathrooms, or installing major fixtures.
  • Permits and code compliance almost always require licensed plumbers.
9. Water Quality Concerns
  • Discolored, rusty, or foul-tasting water may signal pipe corrosion or contamination.
  • A plumber can test and recommend solutions (filters, pipe replacement, softeners).
10. Emergency Situations
  • Flooding, sewage backup, or any plumbing issue you can’t contain.

Rule of Thumb:

  • Call a plumber for anything involving major leaks, hidden pipes, sewer lines, gas connections, or code compliance.
